Passover Recipes

At some point shortly after they were engaged, Lottie invited Lester to a Seder at her parent’s home. Anxious to show off her daughter’s cooking skills, Lottie’s mother insisted that she make the knaidels (matzo balls). But, Lottie, in fact, had never made them. “It’s easy,” said her mother. “The batter is all ready. Just shape them into balls, drop them in the boiling water, cover the pot and let them cook.”

Easy enough. However, not realizing that the balls would expand during cooking, Lottie made them nice and big to impress her husband-to-be. As they sat at the Seder table, everyone could smell the food cooking and appetites ran high. Imagine the expression on Lester’s face as Lottie came through the kitchen door carrying a “plate” of soup (as she always called it) with only one matzo ball, but that one was as big as a cannonball.

Never one to turn away a good thing, Lester ate it all and requested another. He knew then that he had not made a mistake in asking her to marry him.
